My husband bought me this book and my first banjo two years ago. Janet Davis is a great teacher and takes you step-by-step through the process, from the very beginning of tuning your banjo, to playing songs fast (since I'm old, I'm not playing them too...

fast yet). You can go as far as you want to with her teaching. I tried another instructional book by a different author a few months ago, and I couldn't read or understand any of it, and it didn't come with a cd or dvd, like Janet's do. But this book is very easy to learn from. I highly recommend it for anyone just learning to play. My only wish is that I could take lessons from her personally!

This is a great book to start with. Within a few hours of practice one can play some nice rolls already! And that's a lot for a Dutch greenhorn. Br Hugo

  • April 29, 2003 a highly recommended book for beginners

i bought a banjo, this book, and three finger picks one day at a music store. i had very little knowledge of bluegrass music and none of the banjo. i also had not a teacher. the only thing i had was what i told you earlier. with countinous study of...

the book and 1 to 2 hours of practice about three to four days out of the week(i am a very busy student) i was playing foggy mountain breakdown(a kickbutt-tune every banjo player loves to play) in three months. one of the most wonderful things about the book is that it keeps you motivated and informed all the way through. Janet Davis is a wonderful teacher. she definitely has the teaching experience under her belt. the book is like a bag of chips....i just can't get out of it and away from the banjo! i just keep pickin' and grinnin!!!
