  • May 25, 2012 Variations on a Korean Folk Song

This John Barnes Chance composition is an excellent work and captures the sounds and images that come with Korean tradition. The soft melody at the opening of this piece is one of pure amazement and it ties in perfectly with the fast rhythms to come later in the opening section...

. The middle ballad section is a beautiful break from the chaos, only to pick up again as the piece enters it's concluding spiral. This is an incredible work and is certainly recommended to any ensemble.

  • January 11, 2008 Amazing Piece

Although i am only in junior high, my director decided to let our Honors Band play this (which i am in.) It starts off with a smooth melody which ends harmoniously and leads into a fast, upbeat section. This eventually slows down and along the way, time signature changes are...

thrown in. We haven't gotten too far into it, so i don't recall much more of the piece, but there are some beautiful oboe, piccolo, and trumpet solos, and a bass line of mostly euph., tuba, and timpani (which i play) is maintained throughout the piece. I really enjoy playing this song, and i know that at least 99% of my band enjoys it too. Definitely reccomended for high school and above, though. Happy Playing!

  • April 12, 2006 What a spiffing piece!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed playing this piece of music! The intensity of the pause in the middle section on the piece was simply gripping and just left you drooling for more! Playing on the same stand as Amifatti, we both thoroughly enjoyed the use of VIBRATO on the longer notes. Also...

, I thoroughly enjoyed the luscious Cmaj chord in the beginning section of the piece! I would really and truly reccomend this piece to anyone who is looking for a fabulous time and looks to learn lots of new musical techniques! I found that after playing this, my standard of playing improved dramatically! Well done variations on a korean folk song!!!

  • April 11, 2006 A stunning piece of musical writing...

I played this as the principal in the county youth wind orchestra last week. I love this style of music! It was such an honour to open the piece with just the clarinet section. This piece was very moving and i would recommend it to anyone looking for a lovely...

, moving tune, with so much contrast and variation. There are some beautiful solos and harmonies within the piece. I think that 'Creed' by William Himes is a jolly piece for Wind Orchestra (and could be used effectively to open a concert!) 'Excerpts from the Firebird' give youngsters a fantastic experience of talented composer Stravinsky's wonderful work - 'The Firebird' originally written for full orchestra. Also, 'An American Elegy' by Frank Ticheli is an amazing composition and everyone should have the chance at some point to hear if not play this beautiful masterpiece.

  • April 11, 2006 Remarkable

Like 'Abi', i also played this piece in the days of being a member of a youth wind orchestra. Although time has passed since i played this piece, it has remained in my memory as a highly remarkable piece of composing. Such contrast and suspense is built up throughout the...

piece, with an excellent use of the percussion instruments. Being a flute player myself, i have to say this piece was challenging, yet not to the extent of impossible, which is a perfect balance! Overall, i think this is an OUSTANDING piece of musical writing, highly memorable, and definitly played a large part in feeding my musical mind! Thank you, variations on a korean folk song!
