Piano duets performance composed for one (four hands) and two keyboard instruments date from early 17th c. England, reaching a real peak in the second half of the 19th c. when compositions for two pianos, some of considerable complexity, flourished. Together with the development of the post-Liszt piano school, the difficulty for simultaneous execution by both pianists increased many fold. The three virtuoso works for one and two pianos, composed 1890-1970 and performed here by Irina Shishkina and Maya Berdieva, cover nearly a century of Russian music in all its stylistic diversity.
