The Toccata capricciosa op. 36 is the first of a series of works for a solo instrument, written by Miklos Rozsa in the last decades of his life. This maximum reduction is diametrically opposed to the setting, especially of monumental films such as Ben-Hur, for which he became famous. In the radical reduction of the scoring, he saw a return to pure music. The work was dedicated to the Russian cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, who had died shortly before and who, like Rozsa, had emigrated to the USA. In its ABA' form, the Toccata capricciosa contrasts virtuosic furioso outbursts with a lyrical, almost meditative section. Even though a more dissonant, almost aggressive, tone is struck compared to earlier works, D minor remains recognizable as the tonal center.
