I have always loved the sturdy, rustic music that comes out of the Appalachian traditions. When the opportunity arose to write some settings of early 19th century hymn tunes, I naturally gravitated toward those great collections like The Sacred Harp, Southern Harmony, and others for some possibilities. The results were three triptychs of Hymn Preludes for Violin, Cello and Piano dating from 2009, 2011 and 2013 respectively. Here are my final essays in this particular format.

For this set, the violin’s e string is "drop tuned" (scordatura) a whole step to d. This allows for some chords and figurations which would not otherwise be possible.

Performance time for the set is just under 10 minutes. As with the previous sets, these preludes are perfectly suitable for either church or concert use.
