The exercises of this manual will developexecutive facility, cognitive awareness, and improvisational skill in regard tomajor and minor chords in the context of any major key. Unlike typical chord exerciseswhich, on the one hand, may simplistically stress the inversions of a singlechord, or on the other hand, may jump prematurely to full-fledged cadentialprogressions within a given key, THREE approachesmajor and minor chords via a middle-road. This middle-road provides block-chordexercises which are musically pleasing and interesting, theoreticallycomprehensible, and eminently playable for beginner and intermediate students.

THREE featuresinversion exercises which constantly alternate between two chords in a givenkey. This approach avoids the dryness of single-chord inversion exercises aswell as the density and restriction of the common, single-position “I-IV-V7-I”cadential formula. Instead, the student is made to think through the playing ofchords and their inversions as the chords alternate, simultaneously developingawareness, understanding, and experiential knowledge of each chord’s harmonicfunction within a given key. Real musicbecomes drastically more accessible and playable when chords and their soundsin relation to the tonic are well-understood.
