Composed in 1943, this three-movement work is the first piano sonata Eisler had written since his Op.1. It is also his last large-scale work for piano. Here he transforms the expressive repertoire of the Viennese School in a distinctive way, his own style taking precedence over Schoenberg's influence. This edition was edited by the International Hanns Eisler Society.
