The Yearning

The Yearning by Craig Courtney. For SATB choir, piano. Sacred Anthem, Advent, Christ the King. Octavo. Published by Lorenz Publishing Company (LO.10-4171L).

A stunning work of extraordinary power, this inspired anthem begins with a haunting melody that underscores the yearning of "hearts weighed down by ancient grief and centuries of sorrow." The melody and lyrics gradually build to a dramatic climax of fulfillment that is found only in Emmanuel as His faithful people await "the day of His appearing.".

My church choir loved this piece, and it moved some in the congregation to tears! The text is profound and moving, and the music complements it exquisitely. Wow--gems like this are rare.

I don't know when an anthem has touched me as deeply as this anthem has. The words and musical arrangment truly speak to the deep longing that is in everyones heart for an answer to the emptiness in the human soul. Excellent piece for advent, we used it Dec...

of 2011. Let your choir listen to it from this site on your computer and they will be eager to learn it with all it's nuances.

This is a beautiful piece of music, and quite simple to learn and perform too. A lovely melody line, complimented by an evocative piano accompaniment

We have been rehearsing this for the last three weeks, and will offer it on Sunday, December 1 (first week of Advent). It's musically inspiring - so much so that we ask to repeat singing it in practice. And the words are the perfect complement to the music. I know...

that it will be a strong and beloved part of our Advent repetoire.

The combination of text and musical line was just extraordinary. We performed it for the 4th Sunday in Advent and it was so popular, we repeated it as a prelude on Christmas Eve. This is a wonderful, moving piece of music that was easy to learn.
