I sang this with a male chorus at Roosevelt High School, Dayton, Ohio over 50 years ago. I found it profoundly moving then but, even now, it warms my heart just thinking about it. This piece has been seared into my consciousness!

By far the most dramatic of Randall Thompsons work. If you have the chance to hear it all male you will be brought to tears

Sang it at Benson Polytechnic Highschool Portland,Oregon and it left an indelible mark on me. Sung by a all male Glee Club it brought the auditorium to it feet.

  • September 21, 2005 No women, please

The original scoring for men's voices is superior to mixed chorus. With a full orchestra this is an astounding work. Today we'd call it jingo-ims, but in its time it gave me goose bumps. Sang it with Newark Symph in 1947 and it was the most thrilling...

    work I'd ever sung.
