"The Minstrel Boy," written by Thomas Moore (1779–1852), Irish poet and composer, is believed to have been composed in remembrance of friends from his Trinity College student days who had participated in the 1798 rebellion of the United Irishmen. He set his words to "The Moreen," a melody usually identified in terms such as "old Irish air." "The Minstrel Boy" began gaining popularity in the United States during the Civil War, especially in those units with large contingents of Irish Americans. Today, it remains popular with certain military, police and fire organizations, often played by bagpipes at funerals of fallen members. The "Moreen" tune has also been used as a setting for hymns. In John Huston’s 1975 film version of Rudyard Kipling’s novella, The Man Who Would Be King, Danny Dravot (Sean Connery) sings "The Son of God Goes Forth to War" to this melody. More recently, Ken Bible used "Moreen" as the melody for his hymn, "One in Jesus."

This brass quintet version opens with Trombone stating the theme, gradually joined by the other instruments. The second time through takes the form of a dialogue between middle brass and trumpets. The third is contrapuntal in nature, featuring Trumpet 1 playing a delightful lead dominated by eighth notes. The fourth is a quiet interlude; the fifth, a triumphal restatement leading to the end.

Completed in 2016, this arrangement runs about 4 minutes, 33 seconds. Contact the arranger, Les Smith, at lessmith@ufl.edu.
