The Anthem Book comes in two volumes.

Volume 1 is for the choir, and contains the chorus parts of all the works with a few accompaniments of the less well-known pieces.

Volume 2: The Accompaniments Book (spiral-bound) contains all the accompaniments and solos needed for the anthems in Part II of Volume 1.

This collection contains most of the Christian church's popular traditional anthems, inluding at least one work that will be suitable for each of the major services of the year.

The anthems have practicability as a priority. Some are arrangements, some adaptations and some longer ones are abridged to bring them into the scope of a usable anthem. Thirty-six of the works (Part I) are performable as they are, without extra material. The anthems in Part II contain mainly "chorus only" parts. Organists and choirmasters, and in some cases soloists, will need copies of Volume 2: The Accompaniments Book for these.

A few Anglican Chants (Psalms, Magnificat and Nunc dimittis are included, set out in a way that should enable those who are unfamiliar with the style to perform them easily. The hope is that this might help stem Anglican chant's gradual disappearance from general use.

The Appendix consists of "chorus only" parts of some large-scale works, which might be useful for special occasions.
