  • January 14, 2009 Six unfamiliar Schubert String Quartets .

These are six of Schuberts not so well known quartets, and I was looking forward to playing them, but I am very disappointed with the edition. The spacing has been badly planned and it is an unpleasant shock to find a new Quartet starting on the last line at the...

bottom of the previous quartet. Unfortunately this was the particular quartet I was most interested in and the only edition in which I could find it. On some of the pages the staves are far too close together but on other pages they are very widely spaced. I don't think enough care has been taken in the layout - each new quartet should always start at the top of a page and the staves should all have the same spacing. It can be very hard on the eyes to suddenly have a jumble of squashed up notes appear when the stave spacing goes from 20mm to 10mm from one page to the next. Are Barenreiter getting careless or are they just trying to save money ?
