    Richmond, VA
    Difficulty Level:
  • May 07, 2006 Better than Essential Elements

I use this method with my beginners of all ages. One advantage is the usage of rhythmic vocabular from the beginning. Pedagogically, this follows the Orff instruction that my elementary students receive. Very early on, students are taught slurring, hooked bowings, and staccato bowings. The advantage is that the students...

will focus on bow control from the beginning. I would caution the teacher to introduce all new concepts by rote, especially this unit. The disadvantages of this method are few. I teach C- and F-naturals earlier than in the book. This isn't really a problem because I just reteach the first unit with naturals. The worst part of the book is the last few pages. There are much better ways to teach lowered 1st fingers and notes on the E and C strings Supplement this method with an easy note reader (try Stringtunes by Applebaum) followed by easy chamber music (try Beautiful Music for Two String Instruments, Bk. 1, also by Applebaum).

This book has great songs and song segmants, but lacks the good teaching skills that beginning insturctional and song books must have. This book goes at a steady pace, not too fast, not too slow, but goes in a very disorganized order. For example, this book teaches you slurs before...

it teaches you 2/4 time. This said, I think I've came to a conclusion that this book is not the best.
