With his Sonata for Piano op. 20, Miklos Rozsa enters a field with a rich tradition. In a neo-classical tonal language, he succeeds in synthesizing with 20th century innovations, especially in the field of harmony and rhythm. Sophisticated counterpoint, which he learned during his studies in Leipzig, pervades the last of the three movements in particular. As in many of Rozsa's works, the folk music of his Hungarian homeland echoes. The sonata is virtuoso piano music and demands a variety of sounds and expressions from pianists.
