Sketches is very appropriate for beginner pianists, students or schools. It is a set of three short pieces, that aim to be fun, while exploring contrasting ideas of harmony and modality.
This was my first assignment at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, set by my composition teacher, Graeme Koehne. The brief was to write a set of short piano pieces, aimed at the beginner-level pianist, incorporating a modal influence of some kind.
The task's deceptively straightforward nature belied its true challenge: composing music using the simplest of techniques to achieve the maximum result. This forced me to learn the valuable compositional lesson of restraint, and once understood, I discovered a whole new delicate soundworld which I would otherwise have been unable to create. The idea of restraint has now permeated into everything that I write - something that I believe Graeme had intended all along.
These pieces aim to be achievable for any elementary piano student, and through the use of restraint, strive to speak with elegance and clarity.
