Composed by Ghiselin. Miscellaneous Music, String Quartets, Quintets etc. Early Music Library. Choral or Vocal Music. 4 Scores. Published by Magnamusic Distributors Inc (MM.EML0366).

This motet by Johannes Ghiselin (fl. 1490-1510) is taken from MS mus. 34 of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. Structurally this work has some similarity with the setting of the same text by Jacob Obrecht. It also appears to quote two late-fifteenth-century chansons: the opening of the superius is based on the chanson variously attributed to Binchois and Dufay, Je ne vis oncques pareille, and the altus in the third section begins with the first four notes of the well-known J'ay pris amours. . Not much is known about Ghiselin, which is surprising, considering that in his lifetime he had a considerable reputation, ranked second only to Josquin. He is one of several composers associated with Ferrara, but he also worked in Florence, and visited Blois. When the plague hit Ferrara in 1505, he escaped in time, unlike his contemporary Jacob Obrecht, who stayed and succumbed - he appears to have spent his last years in Bergen op Zoom. He was also known as Verbonnet.
