This collection of 13 preludes challenges pianists to build interpretive skills while expressing the vast array of emotion and passion so characteristic of Rachmaninoff's works. In this scholarly edition, Dr. Baylor has included suggestions on how each piece should be performed, including tempos, dynamics, pedaling and metronome marks where necessary.

Typical of Rachmaninoff, most are quite difficult, but beautiful. However, I've found several (#s 3,4 & 6) are worth having this book. #5 is very popular and in several of my other books.

  • March 02, 2012 Great music. Exellent help

I specifically bought this edition for the fingerings and pedalling suggestions, which are very helpful. Particularly Rachmaninov's editions, and also very good ones, are usually without any (this website is excellent as one could see the sample of the music). Every serious musician should have both: the Urtext to...

check and compare the composer's true intentions and the practical editorial solutions with consistent and professional fingerings, pedalling etc. This saves a lot of time, even as a starting point for working out your own solutions. Also if one comes to have a lesson with a good (and probably expensive) teacher, it is better to have the ideas what works or not for you beforehand and be able to ask intelligent questions. I am a professional musician and bought all Rachmaninov's Preludes by Editor Murray Baylor and think it is excellent value for money.

  • April 15, 2009 Watch out!

The music in this edition has been substantially changed, allegedly to make it easier to play. It doesn't work. The music is still just as difficult to play, but Rach's musical intentions have been altered without any artistic justification. Buy another edition instead!
