Prologue and Scherzo for Alto Saxophone was composed in 1999 for Kenneth Radnofsky, for a special concert to honor him as a virtuoso performer, an ambassador for the art of the classical saxophone, a champion for composers to enhance the repertoire, and a teacher who has inspired generations of other saxophonists.
This short piece celebrates Kenneth Radnofsky's own broad range of styles, and interest in colors and nuances which are unique to the saxophone.
I learned about Radnofsky's stylistic range while composing my saxophone concerto Ode to Lord Lord Buckley for him in 1981.
