Published by Philip Brittain (A0.971840).The Presidential Polonaise was composed by Sousa at the request of President Chester A. Arthur in 1886. President Arthur felt that "Hail to the Chief," being an old boating song, was not appropriate as a Presidential salutation. He requested Sousa compose something more suitable. The march "Semper Fidelis" and "Presidential Polonaise" were composed for this use. The "Presidential Polonaise" was used for state affairs at the White House.
