"Chimes" is an easy introduction to the effects of the damper pedal.II. "Thunder and Rain" incorporates the sostenuto (middle) pedal. The sustained bass ("thunder") provides a backdrop for the contrasting sounds of the staccato "raindrops".III. "Train Tunnel" uses both the sostenuto and una corda (soft) pedals. Keys are silently depressed while the sostenuto pedal is added, creating the sound-effect of a tunnel, while the una corda pedal provides a change in dynamics and tone color.An effort has been made to keep the techniques and fingerings compatible with healthier methods of playing for the younger student.My hope is to contribute to the joy that children experience when learning how to play the piano. An exploration of the unique capabilitiesof the acoustic piano can only increase their appreciation of this "King of instruments".Sara Adams .
