This composition is a setting by Rebecca Clarke of a tune attributed to Thomas Tallis, which deftly uses 20th century counterpoint to provide a new experience with the old tune. Clarke was a violist, so the setting is idiomatic and skillful for the instrument. The viola and piano parts individually...

do not necessarily impress, but assembled they create a fine and moving piece.

This is a great piece, very effective and not overly demanding. This edition has some odd fingering choices - It is also expensive when compared with the same piece as part of the collection of shorter pieces. I would recommend the latter which offers a number of other gems.

This is an expansive, romantic work that is well worth playing.
