Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo Suppe Demelli or Franz von Suppe (1819-1895), was the son of a Belgian father and an Austrian mother. In total he wrote some 30 operettas and Steven Verhaert selected Die schone Galathea for his arrangement of the overture. This splendid overture is a real jewel for lovers of the operetta style which is sometimes (unfairly) looked down on.
