  • August 10, 2010 Worked for me

I'm not primarily a violinist, but someone who plays several instruments. I'm not that good on the violin and bought the book just to give me some practice with great melodies. For that, it worked. Nice practice. Not for performance, though (no accompaniment). I guess it depends on...

what you want in for. For me, it worked pretty good.

  • April 04, 2004 short

I had also thought this book was too short to really get into. I thought the songs were pretty good, but way too short. I like playing long songs, that actually express the emotion or theme. I really think the songs needed to be longer.

  • November 26, 2003 Poor value, but still useful

This was disappointing, despite the great content list. Many of the extracted themes were very short - too short to capture the grandeur of the piece. By contrast: Hal Leonard's "Great Classical Themes" (for piano) presents much longer extracts and its extracts have an artistic wholeness. (Leonard's book is...

also 3X longer for the same price.) Still, the themes are great, and some pieces (Bolero, Polovitsian Dances) are long enough to stand on their own. I don't know a good book of classical themes for violin - only, that theme books for piano or guitar usually have longer extracts. This book is useful as a start or for a "taste" of themes - longer versions might be downloaded from sheet music web sites.
