Commissioned by and Dedicated to the Denver School Of The Arts

"On The Path was inspired by driving across magnificent country, particularly Colorado, giving master classes, as I traversed the nation, at performing arts high schools, in the Fall of 2012. My interactions with the bright, talented students and faculty I met along the way were inspiring. This piece, commissioned by the Denver School of The Arts, was a happy side-effect of my tour. The piece flowed out of me. Coming up with a title, however, was not easy. I tend towards the philosophical, and felt in the piece the constant searching and yearning for understanding and meaning we all experience in life, and the desire for perfection that ultimately eludes us but at the same time inspires us to try and better ourselves, to be the best that we can be. The piece consists of two ideas: the walking theme and the melodic, bittersweet, almost romantic rising theme that becomes stronger with every entrance. We close with the walking theme as a reminder that we are always On The Path." (William Goldstein)
