O Be Joyful in the Lord is a nonliturgical sacred concerto on verses selected, and in some instances paraphrased, from the Psalms. In church practice dating from the mid17th century, such works were customarily performed at the Divine Liturgy immediately after the Communion Hymn, while the clergy were partaking of Communion.
