Composed by Brian Joyce. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score. 19 pages. Brian Joyce #2885593. Published by Brian Joyce (A0.836701).I wrote these Nocturnes for a friend whose playing I have long admired. Being more interested in chamber music myself, I had not written anything for solo piano in many years, and in writing these six character pieces I frequently found myself stretched beyond my own comfort level as a player. These pieces also stretch the traditional model of what a nocturne is supposed to be but, as they all have something to do with the theme of "night," I felt the title was justified. The six movements along with the barest possible descriptions are as follows:
I. Arabian Nights (Moorish impressionism) -- II. Night Life (echoes from the Jazz Age) -- III. Moonlight Traveler (title borrowed from a favorite collection of short fantasy stories) -- IV. Nightcrawlers (bad 1950s monster movie music) -- V. Quiet Rain (another impressionistic study) -- VI. Pleasant Dreams (a simple lullaby to tuck things in safe and sound).
Total performance time is approximately 27 minutes.
