Composed by Jean Mouton. Liturgical Use: Christmas. NDC Edition. Text: Latin. Renaissance. Choral Octavo. 16 pages. Duration ca. 5 minutes. Notre Dame Choir Editions #98-NDC024. Published by Notre Dame Choir Editions (PE.NDC024).ISBN 9790300766232. Latin.
This setting of a gregorian antiphon for the Nativity is the kind of compositional tour-de-force for which Mouton was much admired in his day - a lush sonic tapestry is created by the serenely unfolding strands of a quadruple canon. In the principal sources, there are only 4 notated voices (Choir II in this edition); performers were meant to realize the 4 unnotated canonic parts (Choir I) by following clues in the manuscript. This edition includes as a prelude to the motet the very beautiful plainsong tune on which the motet is based; it is not readily available in modern chantbooks.
Winner - 2003 MPA Paul Revere Award, 2nd Prize.
