  • November 29, 2014 Good Middle C Book

While the middle C approach is not shown by research to be the best one for most students, this middle C primer is one of the best. Unlike most middle C books, it does not STAY in the middle C position for most of the book. Rather, it explores a...

number of positions, including a number of non-standard ones. As a result, the student does not associate certain fingers with certain keys. The book emphasizes rhythm by having the student clap the rhythm of each piece before playing it. If the teacher follows this plan, the student will develop an excellent sense of rhythm, which is the most important skill to master. The primer does not explore sharps and flats, nor do any rhythms go beyond quarter notes. Those skills are taken up in the first grade book. This course does not use pre-reading material except for a small section of the theory book. Research shows the value of pre-reading experiences. That is the reason I did not give this a five star rating.

We think it is the best beginner's manual that we have seen. My grandson is learning much from it.
