Composed by Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Graduation,Recital. Score,Set of Parts. 18 pages. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (S0.163519).

Sergei Prokofiev’s comic opera, TheLove for Three Oranges, Op. 33, was first produced in Chicago’s AuditoriumTheatre in 1921. Prokofiev subsequently composed a concert suite from sixof the opera’s selections. Of these, the “March” is probably bestknown. It was adopted as the theme song for a popular radio series, TheFBI in Peace and War, which ran on CBS 1944-1958. Through its use on theprogram, listeners became familiar with the music and were so impressed that itwas recorded and published independently as “The FBI March.” Because ofits bold, driving and rhythmic nature, the “March” is well suited for a brassgroup, and makes for an exciting experience for both musicians andaudience.

This arrangement, written for brass quintet using trumpetspitched in C, was completed in 2012 and runs about 1 minute, 38 seconds. (A Bb-trumpets version is also available.) The arranger, Les Smith, canbe reached at lessmith@ufl.edu.
