Latin.

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was born at Jesi, Italy (also the birthplace of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in 1195), on January 4th, 1710. He is known today primarily as a pioneering composer in the area of comic opera (mainly because of La Serva Padrona, which caused a huge stir upon its performance in Paris in 1752, inciting virtual warfare between supporters of comic and serious opera in that city for two years, and which remains vastly popular to this day), but also composed sacred music (his Stabat Mater, his most famous sacred work, has been popular since its composition), as well instrumental music of various sorts. Pergolesi died, of tubercolosis, on March 16th (perhaps 17th), 1736, at Pozzuoli, near Naples.
