Composer Larry Clark is known for his heartfelt compositions that have received performances around the world. His new piece Kazoku again tugs on the heartstrings by invoking one of the most important relationships in life: family. The piece is lush with broad melodic strokes and warm harmonies to bring across the feeling we get from being surrounded by the love of our families. It is an excellent vehicle to teach phrasing and musicianship to young players.
Kazoku is the Japanese word for family. It was my hope to express heartfelt feelings about family and what this might mean to you. To this end, I wanted the piece to be lovely and sentimental. I wanted the listener to think of great memories of their own families when the piece is being performed. After the short introduction on fragments of the melody the piece moves to main theme in the violins with lush harmonies and counterlines in the other strings. The theme is twenty-four measures in length, in which the second eight-measure portion could be considered the B-theme. After this section the cellos take up the C-theme, which I think of more like a bridge theme that shifts from the main key of G to C. Also, the style changes with the pizzicato accompaniments in the other strings. The bridge theme is repeated, followed by a return of the A-theme with an extension of the cadence before the last statement and climactic fermata that leads to the short, but intense coda. I hope that you and you students enjoy this piece and think of how wonderful families can be.
