Jerome Kern's songs had Broadway and film audiences humming for much of the 1920's and 30's, and many of his stellar compositions have since become pop and jazz standards. In 1933, he wrote the song Smoke Gets In Your Eyes for the operetta Roberta. The beautiful piano ballad has since been covered by Nat 'King' Cole, Paul Whiteman, and the doo-wop group The Platters, who scored a #1 hit with it in 1959. Kern earned the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1936 with The Way You Look Tonight, a song written for the Fred Astaire film Swing Time.
