Composed by Stuart Brown. 21st Century,Contemporary Classical. Score. 37 pages. Published by SB VisionMusic (S0.61517).

Described as "stunningly beautiful" by one of its dedicatees, "Idylls" is a cycle of five songs for soprano and piano, based upon poems by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The composer, Stuart Brown, can be contacted on themusicman55@gmail.com. Performing rights apply in the UK and USA (PRS for Music). The composer's website is at http://home.btconnect.com/sbvision.music/. The total duration of the work is 17'15". The composer provides the following notes: The five songs of which this work is comprised use verses from five very different poems by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Although there is a certain sense of thematic unity running through the work as a whole, the more powerful unifying feature – for me as the composer, anyway – is a deeply felt sense of spiritual purpose. Hence the work starts with the anticipation of Christ's coming, in ringing out an old year while ringing in a new; progresses through a growing reassurance that all is well; celebrates the freedom to which this world is entitled but all too often inhibits by its falsehoods; the reflections of the thirteen-year-old Saint Agnes and her longing, through martyrdom for her faith, to be a part of the church that is the bride of Christ; and ultimately rests in the complete and absolute peace of being reunited with one's creator having crossed the bar of death. The work comes full circle, hence beginning effectively in C‑sharp minor (despite the key signature) and ending in the major key of the enharmonic equivalent D-flat. I dedicate this work to Chen Wang and Benedict Rogers. Chen's voice possesses a seemingly effortless grace, which is well matched to the character of these songs; I have written them specifically with her in mind. Benedict has committed himself to the Roman Catholic Church and to human rights advocacy with a degree of dedication that is remarkable by anybody's reckoning; he is a worthy dedicatee of a song cycle that speaks of Christian commitment and the triumph of freedom. The five songs are: Ring out, wild bells; Love is and was my Lord and King; Of old sat Freedom on the heights; St Agnes' Eve; Crossing the Bar. ("Crossing the Bar" is also available separately.).
