This is an excellent collection of hymns for any violinist. Some of the arrangements are a bit difficult, but can be easily worked out with a little practice. These are great pieces to play when you want to play a hymn, but don't know how to add all the...

    fancy extras. Wonderful book!

As an experienced violinist with Youth Symphony and large church orchestra, I am always looking for interesting arrangements to play for dinners, offertories, etc. that I am invited to play. There are some interesting inserts and runs in these hymns.

I am a violin teacher with professional orchestra experience. Most hymn arrangements I have found have either been too simple (boring - all the interesting stuff was in the piano part) or have been written for "C instruments", usually meaning that though they are written in the range of a violin...

, they are in awkward keys or passages that are more suitable for flute, etc. This book contains several familiar hymns, including Christmas, that are "comfortable" on the violin as well as musically interesting. There are double stops that sound good without being too complicated and a variety of violin-friendly keys. The hymns are generally arranged as theme and variations. Best of all, you don't need an accompanist (which means I can pull one off at the last minute), although there are guitar chords printed in the music, which would make a nice accompaniment. I plan to look for more arrangements by Ms. Carlson.
