Composed by Erik Satie. Arranged by Mark Reeves. 20th Century,Concert,Film/TV,Romantic Period,World. Score. 3 pages. Mark Reeves #418657. Published by Mark Reeves (A0.748658).

This new edition of Erik Satie’s Gnossienne No. 3 offers an improved layout with regard to how the chords are notated. The composer liked to spread the notes of chords across both staffs, possibly to avoid the use of leger lines and thereby making it easier to read the notes. This, however, could imply that the chord notes on the treble staff should be played by the right hand, which is rather distracting for the pianist and it takes longer to process the information. It is much more logical and far easier and quicker to read when the three notes of each chord (which are all either triads in root position or in first and second inversions) are grouped together on the bass staff. With this amendment there can be no doubt that the chords should be played entirely by the left hand. Furthermore, the pattern of notes in each chord is instantly recognizable, thus enabling the pianist to adopt without delay the required hand-shape and position on the keyboard. All other elements of the original score have been retained, such as the absence of a time signature, the exclusion of bar lines and the quirky, sometimes surreal, performance directions. Unlike other editions of this work, English translations have not been included, as numerous interpretations are possible; it has been left to each individual performer to interpret these directions in their own way, as the composer intended. A number of accidentals have been added to avoid any ambiguity caused by the lack of bar lines. The dynamic markings are now positioned more conventionally between the treble and bass staff, instead of above the treble staff. Also, two slurs, not in the original printed edition, have been added. With this new edition you now have a layout that is much clearer and easier to read than the original, offering a more enjoyable playing experience. After all, if the score is easier to read, the music will be easier to play!
