Composed by Gary Penkala. Text: Tallis' Canon. Very simple processional with text from Christmas Lauds. Christmas. Octavo. Published by CanticaNOVA Publications (C5.3015).

The text "From East to West" is John Ellerton's eloquent translation of A solis ortus cardine, the hymn for Lauds (Morning Prayer) of Christmas Day. Combined with the simple and beautiful Tallis' Canon, this text presents the perfect opening for a Christmas liturgy (especially for Midnight Mass, as twelve rings of a single handbell precede each of the first four verses). The unison melody, sung first by male voices, is flexibly expanded as a canon on each subsequent verse, allowing an eight-part texture by verse four. A lively organ interlude in French Baroque style marks the end of the canon and introduces the last verse. This final verse is proclaimed in stirring unison by choir and congregation, supported by a strong organ accompaniment and soaring soprano descant.
