Giuliano Tiburtino, sometimes known as Giuliano Bonaugurio da Tivoli, was born into a family of musicians at Tivoli (near Rome) around 1510, and died in Rome in 1569. He seems to have spent most of his working life in the Papal Chapel in Rome, where he took holy orders in 1552. Tiburtinos pieces are different from most Italian works of their kind in that, with one exception (no. 13) they are based on short hexachord themes, starting with the standard hexachord from C. Rather than presenting a serious of imitative sections on differing themes (as in the ricercars ofAnnibale Padovano, for instance) the motto themes are almost always present; the pieces are also relatively short. - BT.
