These two reworkings of Ockeghems Dung aultre amer both come from MS. 18746 of the Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna. Subscribers to the EML series will be familiar both with Ockeghems original song (printed in EML 341) and four 3-part instrumental arrangements (EML 359). The first setting, by Pierre de la Rue (c.1455-1518) has Ockeghems original tenor in the tenor part, but sounding a fourth lower. Rather than write out this part at its sounding pitch, de la Rue notated it at the pitch of the original song, and added a verbal instruction to perform it a fourth lower, quite a common practice at a time when the notated pitch of a cantus finnus had a certain sanctity. La Rues setting is typically dense and concentrated in its use of imitation, as one would expect from this master of canon and other contrapuntal devices. The second setting, by the mysterious Le Brun, has Ockeghems original top part in the superius, but the remaining parts mostly use material, especially the opening phrase, from another famous fifteenth-century chanson, Colinet de Lannoys Cela sans plus.
