He was the leading Italian composer and organist in Venice at its greatest heights at the chasm between the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque period in music. Presented here is a Canzona published around 1615 for a small brass ensemble of 2 trumpets and 2 trombones. Substitute parts are also included to handle the trombone parts with Bb trumpet, French horn and tuba. This piece exploits Gabrieli’s use of chorale-like themes with melodies passed between all 4 instruments. A nice sounding work for almost any combination of instruments in a small ensemble.
