Blackie is a work for soprano and piano set to an English translation of a Japanese verse by Otomono Yakamochi (718-785). The translation has been used with permission of its owner Anthony Thwaite.
In the poem, "Blackie" was the name of a hawk, the prized possession of a nobleman, used for hunting contests.
The audio clip (part 6, "I Had No Means") is a computer-simulated piano and voice demonstrations.
