Arranged by Lu, Yi-Chih. 20th Century. Score. 15 pages. Yi Chih, Lu #3258135. Published by Yi Chih, Lu (A0.991924).Bartok is one of the most important composers in the field of 20th century folk music. He devoted his lifetime collecting folk music of Hungary and surrounding countries, and tried to fuse them into his own work. In 1945, he wanted to write a piano concerto for his wife as a gift, however, he was severely ill with leukemia and passed away, leaving the last 17 section incomplete. The current version was done by Bartok’s disciple Tibor Serly, completing the composition using the master’s manuscript.
My gratitude goes to Dr. Jiao Yuan Pu for the adaptation of this piano work. During the preparation of NSO Seminar: "What is Composition I - From Folk Song to Bartok", we were discussing the scope of works to perform during this event. Out of nowhere, Jiao asked if I would like to challenge this task, I then agreed without thinking much. After actual tryouts, I find adapting Concerto to Solo piece is a process of deduction, the most difficult parts are choosing which note to remove, and catering the feasibility of performance. The work successfully debuted by me on October 16th, 2016 in National Concert Hall in Taipei.
All musical terms and articulations in this work is based on the dual piano version of Bartok's Piano Concerto No. 3 by Boosey & Hawkes. Any pianist interested, if seen fit, may add notes without breaching Bartok's original intention.
