A Night At Symphony Hall combines three familiar themes in an exciting arrangement for young String Orchestra. The arrangement opens with the theme from Trumpet Voluntary by Jeremiah Clarke. It moves into the theme from the fourth movement of Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 1 in C Minor. From there, it moves to the familiar and exciting theme from The William Tell Overture by Gioacino Rossini, finally returning to a closing statement of the opening theme--Trumpet Voluntary.From an educational standpoint, this arrangement gives young students the opportunity to play both arco and pizzicato, as well as in two keys, modulating from G to C and back to G. It also gives them experience in moving from 4/4 time to cut-time. Since the quarter note in 4/4 equals the half note in 4/4, the transition i snot difficult and will create excitement in the overall performance.For additional insight into the music, it would be interesting to have students do research about the three composers and also to listen to the original recordings of the works.
