Taking four of Fanny Crosby's best-known hymns, Mr. Courtney has created an anthem that takes us through many moods and an occasional surprise. The first hymn, Blessed Assurance, is approached much more slowly and lyrically than the usual quick and hearty tempo to which we have grown accustomed in congregational singing. Rich, unexpected harmonies mark the first three hymns and the use of hemiola takes the predictability of the 6/8 meter found in so many Fanny Crosby hymns and fills it with rhythmic vigor.
