During the winter break, I wanted to compose this piece to impress my one of my USC professors, composer Sarah Gibson. What inspired my to compose 8 variations on the hymn by Cruger is that when I took Functional Skills for Keyboard Majors I during the 2016-2017 academic year at the University of Southern California, I did a figured bass exercise on the hymn.
The variations range from four different periods: baroque, classical, romantic, and, of course, contemporary. Most of the variations are inspired by styles' of different composers, including Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, Busoni, Brahms, and Rzewski.
Manuscript. Audio clip included; however, the audio clip only consists of the theme that is played five times not by me but by pianist Andrew Remillard.
