These songs are nicely varied, ranging from very simple settings of popular melodies to some elegant contrapuntal pieces.They are taken from MS Add. 35087 of the British Library, a source that dates from the beginning of the 16th century o and compiled for Jer6me Lauweryn, a Flemish nobleman who served in the government of three rulers of the Burgundian Netherlands, and who died in 1509. They are mostly written in a transitional style that is midway between that of the rondeaux of the 15th century and the Parisian chansons of the 1520s. In some cases popular songs may be involved: in no. 4 the tenor part, which clearly has the main melody, is very probably based on a popular tune, though other surviving settingsof the same text use a different melody; no. 6 may also be another such piece. No. 3 is one of a group of extremely simple pieces that are either straight settings of popular tunes or written in imitation of a popular style. At the opposite extreme from this is Appenzellers rather longer and more motet-like chanson (no. 7), with its flowing contrapuntal lines and overlapping cadences.
