'Etude No.2 in G Minor 'Scales' by Nicholas Locke (2017)
This piece was written to make practicing scales more fun!
I wanted to write an exercise that featured fast scales that also felt natural to the hand. G harmonic minor is a scale that can be played quickly and easily, so it was an obvious choice.
From that exercise I developed this etude which has helped me to keep a relaxed hand and even legato sound.
This etude features right & left hand scales, scales on the octave and also playing left hand chords over big scale runs, a staple of the virtuoso style.
The main theme occurs in the middle of the piece with flourishing scale runs and powerful chords, my personal favourite of the set.
With slow practice this piece could easily be learned by an intermediate pianist, and you could be playing beautiful virtuosic music in no time!

I started piano when I was 14 and quickly fell in love with classical music. I attended the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney for Composition but dropped out after a year.
