The second of two sonatas was dedicated to Beethoven his great friend and mentor and was composed at a time when Ries was studying piano with Beethoven and composition with Albrechtsberger in Vienna in 1803. The work is divided into three movements with an unusual reversal of form that sees the first movement placed last and is technically the most demanding of the pair with a generous offering of bravura passagework. A virtuoso composition full of heat and fire that will test and showcase the skill of any performer who accepts the challenge this work presents.
