These two lively canzoni da sonar come from the Pelplin Tablature, (MS 304-8 of Biblioteka Seminarina in Pelplin, Poland), a large collection of just under 800 pieces written rather carefully in German keyboard tablature around 1620-30: it is available complete in facsimile. The vast majority of the instrumental pieces are Italian in origin: most have also survived in part book sources, but a few, including the present two, have so far not been traced. The two pieces printed here are nos. 823 and 870 in the Pelplin catalogue.
