Composed by Mortaro. Recorder Quartets, Miscellaneous Music. Early Music Library. 4 Scores. Published by Magnamusic Distributors Inc (MM.EML0302).

These two pieces are taken from Primo libra de canzoni a quattro voci di Antonio Mortaro da Brescia, published in Venice in 1600. Mortaro was a prolific composer of church music, who joined the order of the Franciscans in 1595: apart from two organist's appointments in Milan and Novara, he seems to have spent much of his career in his native city of Brescia. The Primo libro is his only surviving publication devoted entirely to instrumental music, though his Secondo libro delle messe of 1610 contains two 13-part canzoni (sadly these have survived incomplete). La Malvezza is presumably named after Cristofano Malvezzi, one of the main composers of the famous Florentine intermedii of 1589: a book of well-crafted ricercars by him has survived. The last few bars of this piece seem to be a quotation of the internationally popular melody known variously as the "Queen's Almain", "Une jeune fillette" etc. CONTENTS: La Pozzobonella La Malvezza.
