Published by Justin Langley (S0.136553).I began this piece as a college compositionassignment when I was given the lyrics to an old hymn, “Give to the Winds” (to thisday I have not heard the original melody). As I wrote an original melody to fitthe text, I felt prompted to continue writing, trying to balance the “classic”choir sound with counterpoint and rhythmic support of a more theatrical,perhaps acapella style. Though the piecebegins with a rather subdued alto solo, by the end it ought to rouse andinspire with powerful, sweeping melodies and theologically rich text.
This piece is suitable for advanced high school or collegechoirs, though I have a second version with more conservative vocal ranges,well suited for high school or larger, contemporary church choirs. The piano partrequires an adept accompanist, or one with the ability to modify/simplify.
